Comparison Essay

There are unfair things in life that can be difficult, and you can choose to do something about it or you can choose to do nothing. Both characters in the book “The Giver” and Kesha’s song “Praying” choose to take action. Jonas in “The Giver” sees how unfair his community is so he decides to leave. In Kesha’s song a young woman leaves an abusive and unfair relationship. In both of these texts, we learn that you should act on something that you know isn’t right.

A theme that could work for both texts is, things may seem perfect but their actually unfair and flawed. In “The Giver” Jonas is one of the only ones that sees how unfair his community is and so he decides to do something about. So he leaves and saves another character in the story. In “Praying” it states, “No more monsters, I can breathe again.” This shows that she saw her ex as a “monster” and she doesn’t see him anymore, and she saved herself for leaving the relationship.

There are things that are different in both texts. In “The Giver” Jonas doesn’t have some one that him loved trying to hurt him. Unlike in “Praying” the young woman loved the “monster”. When Jonas left that made things worse, but when the young woman left that made things improve. In the song it states, “Well, you were wrong and now the best is yet to come.”

In conclusion both texts, the giver and praying, show that leaving is best is if something is unfair like a messed up community or an abusive relationship.

Literary Essay on “The Giver”

Lois Lowry’s suspenseful story, “The Giver” is about one of many little communities that live in the future with clouds, and see everything in black and white. While Jonas is the main character and lives with his mother, father, and younger sister. Jonas becomes the receiver at the 12 ceremony, and learns memories and secrets about the community, that no one else knows but him, the Giver and the elders. One lesson of this story is, what may seem perfect can be unfair and flawed.

This theme gets built from the beginning of the story by the author. Everything was set up to seem as if the community was perfect, with all of the rules, but that changed after the 12 ceremony. When Jonas became the receiver he saw the communities flaws and how unfair it really was. He found out what getting released really means, and how the elders are keeping secrets from the people of the community.

By the middle of the story, the reader begins to see the flaws of the community. One example is when Jonas stops taking his pills, that the elders give to everyone. In the book Jonas thinks to himself, “I just had this feeling to stop taking them.” When he did stop, he started seeing color, unlike everyone else. But why would the elders not want the people to see in color? Another example is one of the babies Jonas’s dad brought home from work. His name is Gabe, and he won’t sleep at night, all he does is cry. So when Jonas found out that Gabe was going to be released, he saved him.

Although only a few people see the unfairness, like Jonas, Gabe, and the giver, everyone else thinks it’s perfect. The people of the community that don’t know what’s really going on, see the community as they have always seen it. Following the rules, seeing black and white, and no lying is all they have ever known. They can’t see the bad where they live. All this information supports the theme of the story “The Giver” which is, What may seem perfect can be unfair and flawed.

The setting in “The Giver” is the future. Its very different that what were living in.  They live in the clouds, up in the grey sky. cell phone policy (final draft)

Blackhawk Middle school has a strict policy on the students phones. They’re not allowed to have them out in class, in lunch, or in the hallways, etc. The students have a strong hate against this rule. I interviewed  some students from this middle school, some seemed to think “The phone policy is good, students shouldn’t be on their phones during school.” But others said,” it is so stupid that teachers can be on their phones if we’re working, but if were done we cant. and if they get a phone call they get to answer it. That’s not fair!” another student answered,” we should be allowed to have our phones at lunch and seen when they are in our pockets. if they go off in class, we should be able to just turn them off not get them taken.”

the school has a policy that if the” phones are in sight they are in use.” but many of the teachers at this school don’t follow this rule. if they don’t see you on it then they won’t take it. If the students leave their phones in their locker and their go off the school staff will take them and turn them into the office. Then guardians have to come in and take time out of their day to come to the school because of this stupid rule. Picture this, you’re in class and you forgot to turn off your ringer and a family member texts you and its important, you’d get your phone taken and have it turned into the office.

But in the advanced art class the students are allowed to use their phones. They use them for pictures to get ideas to draw. None of the other art classes during the school day get to use their phones. This is unfair to the other students in the regular art classes. I have heard some of the students being mad about this.

“Approved cell phones must ALWAYS be in silent mode while on school campus, unless otherwise allowed by a teacher. Headphones may be used with teacher permission. Students are not authorized to use headphones with their cell phones during lunch or between classes.” This is the CELL PHONE POLICY -at Liberty Christian Academy. But why aren’t you allowed to use the phones or headphones during those times?

Students feel embarrassed when they want to call their parents from the classroom phone. Everyone can hear their conversation. If students could use their own phones to call their guardians and go out in the hall way, that would be more comfortable. Plus guardians don’t always answer the phone because they don’t know the schools number. If you got to use your phone then they would know your phone number and answer it almost always.

Some students hide their phones so the teachers don’t see them just for the thrill of it, to not get caught, while breaking the rules. So even though there is a cell phone policy not everyone follows it. So even though this middle school has a cell phone policy, not everyone follows it.

SHOCKING NEWS

On Thursday August, 24 20017 in Mr.Horeings eight grade enrichment language arts class, Mrs.Oaks, our schools instructional coach for Blackhawk Middle School, told Mrs.Godfreys and our class that on September 5th, we would have to start wearing school uniforms everyday.

She asked if we should get colored or black and white flyers with all of the information on it. Since it was back to school night for the parents she would give them the flyers then. The classes started to whisper because of this shocking news. She could hear the voices getting louder from the two combined classes, so she said that she could take 4 questions.

“What are the colors going to be?” one kid asked. Another said, “Why are you telling us now after we bought our clothes for school.” “We just think its better because there has been lots of stress on you kids to have the coolest clothes and studies show that you will do better on tests when we give you clothes to wear.”, Mrs.Oaks answered in a hurry, because she has to tell others classes.

On Mr.Horeings side of the class they kept saying that they were going to protest. They were going to wear their regular clothes to school, or not go to school at all. They were saying this because they already spent lots of money on back to school shopping. We were all questioning what shoes and sweat shirts we were gonna be able to wear. Mrs.Oaks said that the colors would be red, navy blue, and the pants would be khakis, but they would have skirts for the girls as well. None of the students wanted this.
